Message from the new ISI Director

On July 1 I officially started as the new director at the ISI. It was almost vacation and we were in the middle of the exams of my children and sweet 16 of my youngest daughter. Before my official starting date I already participated in parts of the ISI Executive Committee meeting in May.

A message from the ISI Director

It feels unreal: here in the Netherlands spring has started with hyacinths and tulips in bloom, while in Ukraine people are fighting for their lives. Many initiatives have been taken to help Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees.

The ISI is deeply concerned about the Russian invasion of Ukraine

This month is dominated by the news on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What we did not think would be possible has happened. Day by day we are confronted with the horrifying  images of devastation, military and civilian victims, as well as hundreds of thousands of people fleeing the country. The first groups of refugees have already arrived here in the Netherlands and are telling their heart-rending stories.

What will 2021 bring us?

Hope

The start of 2021 was turbulent taken the unprecedented events in Washington DC. We hope nonetheless that this year will bring us more positivity than the previous one. We hope the situation caused by the pandemic will change for the better allowing us to resume normal life and personal interactions. All of our hopes are pinned on the vaccines but it is clear it will take some more time before we can embrace normal life.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Remote work from home has become the norm for the ISI Permanent Office and it is amazing how well we can cope with the work and turn challenges into opportunities. One year ago, I could not have imagined and would not have thought that all ISI staff would work from home, but it turned out to be possible and we are proud of the result. Of course we all miss our daily contacts and know the situation will not change before the start of 2021 so we need to be patient.
